I wanted to share my production blog for Upstander—an award-winning VR experience that premiered at Tribeca.
The blog breaks down the process behind creating a VR narrative in a game engine, with a focus on building workflows that let you move faster by leveraging real-time rendering. At the time, there was very little precedent for producing animated 360° VR stories in Unreal, so much of the work involved inventing the pipeline while making the VR film. While to explore the use of embodiment to push the medium.
While Upstander is a VR experience, the core ideas—rapid prototyping, spatial storyboarding, iteration-friendly workflows, and process-driven decision making—translate directly to 2D and traditional rendered films. The goal was never just to finish a project, but to develop systems that maximize what emerging technology makes possible.
